The number of rooftop solar panels installed in Australia has continued to decline for the second month in a row, with national market volumes in September down around 3% compared to August, when 273 MW were installed.

Australian households and businesses installed almost 265MW of new rooftop solar last month, but the latest data from industry analyst SunWiz shows the market fell by around 8MW in volume monthly compared to August.

SunWiz chief executive Warwick Johnston said the slowdown, which comes after rooftop PV installations reached a record 302 MW in Julyhas caused national market volumes to fall below the linear average.

“The monthly figures are below the linear average,” he said, noting that September year-to-date is 5% higher than the figures observed around the same time last year.

“The 265 MW recorded in September is above the volumes observed in the same month in 2022 and 2023, but lower than those in 2021,” he said.

Johnston said a slowdown in volumes in New South Wales (NSW) was responsible for the lion’s share of the monthly national decline.

“NSW has dragged down national volumes, with the state reporting an 8% decline month-on-month,” he said.

The other states also cooled, except South Australia and Victoria, which improved, and Queensland, which remained stable.

SunWiz said all residential segments cooled in September, but most are in line with their linear averages.

Most commercial segments, with the exception of the 30 to 50 kW range, improved in September and exceeded their linear averages.

Johnston said the average system size increased to 10.22 kW in September, the second highest month in recent memory.
