Abu Dhabi Future Energy Co. (Masdar) is working with Malaysia’s Sarawak Energy and Gentari to assess the potential for a large-scale floating solar array on the northwestern coast of Borneo.

Sustainable energy developer from Abu Dhabi Masdar and two MalaysiaHeadquartered companies state-owned Sarawak Energy and clean energy solutions provider Gentari have signed a joint study agreement to assess the feasibility of a floating solar project.

The proposed project would be installed at the Murum Hydroelectric Power Station reservoir in the Malaysian state of Sarawak, on the northern coast of Borneo.

pv magazine

The Africa-focused November edition of pv magazine looks at the prospects of ‘Made in Africa’ solar panels and new approaches to involving PV companies in financing grid infrastructure and making buying domestic solar energy as easy as doing the grocery shopping. Elsewhere, we look at intercontinental interconnectors and India’s emerging green hydrogen industry.

The study will assess the potential for a large-scale floating setup on the Murum Reservoir, considering technical feasibility, environmental impact and economic viability to determine whether the project can be successfully implemented.

Masdar CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi said the deal follows an agreement signed with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority in 2023 to develop 10 GW of clean energy projects across the country.

The project will be Masdar’s second floating solar power plant in Southeast Asia 145 MW array in Cirata, Indonesia.

The world’s largest floating offshore solar power plant, a 440 MW project in Taiwan, was recently put into use.
