Trina Storage, the energy storage unit of Trina Solar, will deliver a 50MW/100MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Scottish Highlands.

Trina Storage has signed construction contracts with investment manager Temporis Capital and Clarke Energy, who will provide the EPC wrap for the project, called the Boat of Garten BESS. Tom Harada, investment director of Temporis Capital, noted that this is the company’s first BESS project, one of three being developed with its funds.

The location is expected to be put into use in the first quarter of 2026. Trina is providing its fully integrated Elementa solution for the project, which was developed by Gigabox Developments, a utility-scale BESS developer that claims to have a 1 GW pipeline. It will retain a minority stake in the project, having secured a grid connection and planning permission for the BESS site, with a focus on delivering net benefits for biodiversity.

Gigabox is a joint venture between Whirlwind Renewables, a Yorkshire-based renewable energy developer, and Narec Distributed Energy, a commercial renewable energy and networks consultancy that has developed two other Scottish BESSs.

In 2021, JLEN Environmental Assets Group Limited acquired 100% of an equity stake in Gigabox and invested £12.2 million in the developer’s West Gordie 50MW lithium-ion plant, which began commercial operations in 2023.

Clarke Energy offers a 16-year full O&M agreement that provides 24/7 performance monitoring and maintenance; Trina Storage also offers performance guarantees for the Elementa units for the life of the project.

Adam Wray-Summerson, head of sustainable solutions at Clarke Energy, explained: “By including Trina Storage Elementa BESS equipment in the overall EPC contract, Clarke Energy is helping to minimize supply risk for our customer and ensure longevity of performance of the equipment throughout the life of the equipment. the project.”

At the beginning of the year, Trina Storage supplied four Elementa 0.5P cabinets with a 2-hour runtime for integration into the Meadow (10MW), Sandon Brook (35MW), Fern Brook (20MW) and Birch (30MW) owned solar farms from Low. Carbon.

The first UK project using Trina’s Elementa product was the 50MW/102MWh Swangate BESS in Yorkshire.
