South Africa chooses bidders for 1.76 GW of solar and battery projects – SPE

The South African government has identified preferred bidders for 16 renewable energy projects, worth a total of ZAR44.2 billion ($2.4 billion) in investments, to boost solar and battery development.

The South African government has announced the appointment of preferred bidders for 16 renewable energy projects under its latest procurement programs, including PV installations and battery energy storage facilities. The projects represent a combined investment of more than ZAR 44.2 billion.

South Africa’s Department of Electricity and Energy said eight solar projects, totaling 1.76 GW of contracted capacity, had been selected under “Bid Window 7” of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (REIPPPP). The projects were chosen from 48 bids, securing a total of ZAR31.4 billion in investments.

“South African equity participation of 49% of all Preferred Bidders and an average Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) participation of 46% have been recorded in this bidding window,” the department said in a statement on the official South African government news website. desk.

According to the South African government, the projects are expected to create 6,971 jobs measured in employment years, while ZAR7.8 billion will be spent on local content during construction and ZAR2.4 billion during operation and maintenance.

Separately, eight projects were named as preferred bidders in the Battery Energy Storage Independent Power Producer Procurement Program (BESIPPPP) “Bid Window 2”, representing an additional investment of ZAR 12.8 billion.

Earlier this month, the South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) revealed that the country had deployed 961 MW of private sector solar energy in the first ten months of 2024. The organization forecast robust growth in the commercial, industrial and utility markets. , despite a decline in the housing market.
