The Danish Energy Agency has developed an online tool to assess the solar potential on the roof, using laser scan data and information from the registrar. The solution does not assess the economy of projects.

The Danish Energy Agency has released an online tool to evaluate the PV potential of roofs nationwide. The website sologvindinfo.dk Shows the average exposure to solar energy for each roof surface, so that owners are helped to determine which parts of their roofs get the most solar radiation.

“Building owners will receive a new tool that will quickly and easily identify where they can start most cheaply with their detailed research into a solar cell project,” said Stig Uffe Pedersen, deputy director -general of the agency. “This will make it easier to find out where solar cells on the roof contribute most effectively to the green transition.”

The tool relies on an altitude model made from a laser scan performed by aircraft. It also uses construction and housing data from the National Register, together with meteorological information, shadows, roof slopes and orientation. However, the tool does not take local municipal regulations into account.

Pedersen said that the model does not evaluate the economy of a specific solar project, such as the energy consumption of the building, wearing roofs or access to the electricity grid and the existing facilities. “These factors must be investigated in more detail before a specific project can be assessed,” he added.

The agency said that PV is currently good for about a third of the solar capacity of Denmark. The total amount of capacity installed on the roof has tripled since 2020, mainly due to the approval of electric vehicles and heat pumps.
