Affordable Solar announced the groundbreaking and construction of the very first community project of New Mexico, which marked an important milestone in the transition from the state to clean energy and community -driven sustainability. The 5-MWAC Cuidando Los Niños Community Solar Project, located in Valencia County, is expanding access to renewable energy for new Mexicans and strengthens the dedication to environmental and social progress.

The project is being built in collaboration with the GridWorks of New Mexico, a familiar leader in solar construction. It is mentioned in honor of the non-profit organization Cuidando Los Niños, which offers critical services for children and families who experience homelessness.

The Community Solar ACT (SB84), signed in the law in April 2021, laid the foundation for projects such as these, so that electricity customers can subscribe to electricity produced by a renewable energy facility in less than 5 MW. Subscribers can compensate for their monthly energy costs via credits on their utility accounts. Fifty percent of the project energy production will immediately support the reduction of the electricity accounts for qualified New Income New Mexicans.

“After almost four years of hard work, we are ecstatic to start building this historical project and play a role in bringing renewable energy to communities in New Mexico,” said Dylan Connelly, project developer at Affordable Solar. “This project not only reflects our dedication to clean energy, but also emphasizes our dedication to return to the communities where we live and work.”

As a recognition of the essential work of Cuidando Los Niños, Affordable Solar has made a first donation to the organization after receiving the project price, with a larger contribution planned after completing the project at the beginning of the summer 2025.
