The Canadian company Hyrostor has obtained the approval of the NSW government to build a CAES facility of 200 MW/1.6 GWH in a non -used mine cavity near Broken Hill in the west of the state.

The Aud 652 million ($ 415 million) Silver City Energy Storage Center (Scesc) will use the advanced CAES technology from Hydrostor that produces heated compressed air with the help of excess electricity during periods of low energy demand. The compressed air is sent to a specially built by an axis underground cave. When energy is required, compressed air is sent back to the shaft to drive a turbine that generates electricity that can be used to stabilize the local schedule, offer energy for Broken Hill or are sold in the National Electricity Market (NEM) schedule of Australia.
