Fraunhofer shows hydrogen microgrid platform – PV Magazine International

The Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology Iwu will present a new hydrogen microgrid platform at the end of March. The researchers say it can help to serve hospitals, remote rural areas and war -torn regions.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Machine Tools and Forming Technology IWU is planning to present a hydrogen microgrid platform, Hygrid, at the upcoming Hanover Messe Trade Show.

Fraunhofer researchers said that hydrogen microgrids arise as a feasible option for decentralized energy supply in Germany. They noted that hydrogen storage can contain large amounts of energy for longer periods when needed.

For several years, Fraunhofer IWU has worked on the Reference Factory H2 initiative, which focuses on developing efficient production processes for electrolyzers and fuel cells. The Institute now designs initial production system concepts for sports centers and hospitals.

The researchers said that hospitals can fully utilize hydrogen microgrids, because electrolysis produces oxygen that can be used as technical oxygen or for cleaning and disinfecting water.

The core component of the Hygrid platform, the Hyventus Electrolyzer, was developed by the Reference Factory H2 initiative in collaboration with industrial partners.

Fraunhofer said Hygrid offers a cost-effective, sustainable Microgrid solution that can also store the renewable force for the next winter of Ukraine.

“As a scaled plug-and-play solution, in war torn up and elsewhere, Hygrid can cover a reach of a few to a few hundred Kilowatt ideal for hospitals, companies, schools or remote rural areas,” the researchers added.

De Hannover Messe takes place between March 31 and April 4.
