The Ministry of Energy and Mijnen from Guatemala and the National Electric Energy Commission (CNEE) has launched an energy auction to contract up to 1400 MW of guaranteed capacity and associated energy from 2030 for a period of 15 years.

President Bernardo Arévalo said that the expected investments in generation and transmission varies from $ 3 billion to $ 5 billion. The wholesale market manager (AMM) will manage the contractual framework.

Eligible projects include renewable sources-solar, wind, hydroelectric and geothermal, equivalent, non-renewable low-renewable energy sources such as natural gas, ethanol and propane. Authorities will give priority to sustainability and emission reduction.

The auction will grant contracts based on the lowest generation costs. Due to the flexible structure, the process comprises two energy blocks: a basic block for all hours and a supplementary block for peak demand.

Winning projects can start supplying energy on 1 May 2030, 2031, 2032 or 2033, depending on the development time line of each factory. Contracts last up to 15 years for new facilities and five years for existing.

Developers must submit bids before 31 October.

Guatemala had 102 MW installed PV capacity at the end of 2024, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena).
