The largest battery energy storage system in Italy was officially launched yesterday on Rome-Fiumicino Airport.

State ownership Gas and Electricity Company Enel’s 2.5 MW/10 MWh Pioneer project consists of 762 battery packages and modules. Half of the batteries of the site came from Mercedes-Benz, while electric vehicles (EVs) of Stellantis-including Chrysler and Citroën among his brands include 30% of Pioneer batteries, with the balance from Nissan Cars.

Aeroporti Di Roma (ADR) of Airport Management has collaborated on the project, which also used the expertise of the German Fraunhofer Research Institute.

Rome-Fiumicino already has the largest self-consumption sun project on a European airport and pioneer will be integrated with that “solar farm” facility.
