Engie Pilot Program includes ‘precycling’ cooperation with Solarcycle

A new pilot program from ENGIE NORTH -DAMERIA Contains what the company calls a “precycling” determination for 375 MW of solar panel and system componentecycling over several projects with the aim of distracting an estimated 1 million panels of landfills.

Engie works together with Solarcycle To develop the program as part of an increasing approach to circularity. The company will drive a new precycling determination to include the solar panel and the project componentecycling in first agreements on four projects.

The precycling determination includes recycling in power buying agreements and helps developers to record the project at the start of the project. This is especially relevant for energy buyers aimed at project circularity and sustainability goals.

The agreements ensure that about 1 million panels of 375 MW of projects in the midwest are recycled when they reach the end of their lives, which supports the full circularity of the projects. Solarcycle estimates that the company will distract 48 million pounds of landfills from landfills and will avoid approximately 33,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. In addition, as many construction waste and system components as possible will be recycled as part of the progra.

“Our collaboration with Solarcycle shows the shared commitment we have for the long -term sustainability of our industry,” said Caroline Mead, Senior VP of Power Marketing at Engie North America.

As the demand for electricity in the United States increases, domestic clean energy is essential to meet the requirements of energy capacity. This cooperation between the two companies stipulates that the solar panel and the system components on these projects will have complete traceability to ensure that the circularity goals are achieved and eventually return to the domestic supply chain to form the next generation of clean energy materials. The obligation is made possible by the advanced tracking options of SolarCycle that guarantee each panel of the projects is recycled and that the recovered material is sent back to the supply chain.

“The precycling determination of ENGIE is a new precedent for the solar industry on the utility scale by proving that principles of circular economy can be achieved without complex regulatory intervention and in a way that does not require a advance payment,” said Jesse Simons, Cofounder at Solarcycle.

These first projects are expected to be completed in the coming years and will contribute to the more than 12 GW wind, solar and battery storage that is operated by Engie in North America.
