Smart Pension has announced a GBP 330 million investment in two funds managed by Octopus Energy Generation. The British workplace pension provider will invest 5% of its standard fund in two funds managed by the investor of renewable energy sources: Sky (Octopus Renewables Infrastructure SCSP) and Oetf (Octopus Energy Transition Fund Fund).
The investment of Smart Pension is expected to help finance a series of UK Clean Energy projects, including the first ground heat pump network financed by investors in South Wales. The project is supplied by the British manufacturer of the Kensa heat pump and will, when completed, deliver heating and hot water to 114 new houses.
The investment in Kensa was welcomed by the British Chancellor of the treasury Rachel Reeves. The Minister of Finance of the United Kingdom has credited government reforms with “unlocking investments” that “will put more money in the pockets of working people”.
“That is why I am so enthusiastic about the investment of Smart Pension in the first commercially funded land pump network of the UK in South Wales, which yields returns, growth and jobs,” said Reeves.
James Lawrence, director of investment proposition at Smart Pension, said that cooperation with Octopus and Kensa “enables us to invest in British infrastructure to offer measurable environmental and social impact for years.”
As part of the investment in Octopus, 1.5 million Smart Pension members will have access to materials such as case studies and carbon reporting, which shows how their investment is used to support the implementation of renewable energy sources.
Octopus energy generation manages 4.3 GW green energy projects in 21 countries. The Sky Fund is a diversified portfolio that has been invested in assets for renewable energy, while the Oetf Fonds focuses on the rollout of energy technologies in new sectors, such as heat pumps of land source and long-term energy storage.
