Ko-Solar, an American solar technologies, and R. Kohlhauer, a German specialist in the field of sound barrier systems, announced plans to offer Turnkey PV-integrated wall and sound barrier resystems for transport corridors, as in addition to motorways, railways and landing beans.

The two companies will focus on turnkey projects in North America and Europe. They are planning to use highly efficient solar panels that are integrated in barriers made from advanced sound -absorbing and sound protection materials, designed for sustainability, modularity and grid compatibility.

“These systems can be configured for both roster connected and off-grid applications and can also support the integration of the charging of electric vehicles and battery storage solutions in both national and urban environments, which further develops the transition to clean, resilient transport infrastructure,” Koray Kotan, founder of Koot Solar, told further PV Magazine.

It is a challenging PV application because it requires not only stable generation of solar energy and effective reduction of sound pollution, but also a low-glare, aesthetically acceptable solution with safe structural integrity.

“We are currently in advanced phases of various pilot and demonstration projects in the United States and work together with the departments of the state, highway and rail authorities, universities and private railway companies,” said Kotan.

When it comes to PV technology, reliable, anti-reflective, low glare solar panels are preferred. “Whether we use Perc or Topcon technology depends on the budget, scale and specific requirements of the project,” Kotan explained.

The two intend to rely on established technology, design and installation methods that are already used in the conventional sound barrier infrastructure. Kohlhauer will bring his experience with solar energy barrier projects in Germany, Switzerland, Austria and Poland, which demonstrates proven performance and international expertise.

Ko-Solar was founded in 2018 to design, finance, install and monitor PV-integrated highway and rail barrier structures. R. Kohlhauer was founded in 1993 and specializes in sound security systems. It is active throughout Europe and international.

Elsewhere, a Japanese rail operator PV tests PV on sound barriers and in Lithuania a team of bifacial panels is testing on a highway-consuming noise barrier.
