China new energy storage tops 100 GW while lithium catches up, pumped Hydro – PV Magazine International

The new energy storage capacity of China exceeded 100 GW in June 2025, with total installations of 164.3 GW, which surpass pumped Hydro additions in the midst of accelerating implementations and changing market dynamics, according to the China Energy Storage Alliance (CNESA).

The new market for energy storage from China reached earlier this week in the first half of 2025, according to a report from CNESA on the Western Energy Storage Forum in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia.

CNESA said that the total energy storage capacity in China end-Juni at 164.3 GW was an increase of 59% year after year, while cumulative storage of new energy-similar lithium-ion battery energy systems-first surpassed 100 GW and reached 10% increase in the previous year)

The report documents a structural transformation in the China storage mix. Pomphydro, which was good for 89.3% of the capacity at the end of the previous five -year period, has fallen to 37.4% of the fleet; Lithium-ion now represents 59.9%. CNESA characterizes the change as a fundamental technology route shift while the industry goes from a single track to a landscape with several patients.
