Scottish Marine and Solar Energy Firm Mocean Energy has announced that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Dutch-head office floating solar developer Solarduck.
The two companies will work together to develop floating hybrid power-generating systems offshore, whereby Mocean Energy’s golf energy technology combines with the floating solar platforms from Solarduck.
The companies state that the joint concept at a high level that they deliver will be used mainly to offer clean and reliable energy for electricity, communication and auxiliary systems used by external offshore energy assets. According to the two companies, this concept can also be used to support other offshore sectors, including Defense and the wider blue economy.
Both Solarduck and Mocean Energy are separate recipients of investments from the Norwegian Cleantech and Oceantech Investor Katapult Ocean. Katapult Ocean has made countless investments in Solarduck since 2020, when Solarduck participated in the business accelerator program of Katapult Ocean.
Subsequently, in December 2023, Katapult Ocean was part of a consortium of investors that Solarduck provided with € 15 million (US $ 17.6 million) in Finance to support Solarduck’s mission to use more than 1 GW offshore solar capacity of Zonne -PV -Germany in the year 2030.
In the meantime, Mocean Energy Energy Financing of Matapult Ocean insured in November 2023, where Katapult Ocean is one of a number of investors who contributes to a £ 2.2 million (US $ 2.9 million) of equity increase.
Cameron Mcnatt, director of Mocean Energy, said that De Mou marks the next step in a “promising business and technical collaboration” between Mocean Energy and Solarduck. Mcnatt added that the partnership will see that a special focus is given on supplying power and communication to external sites in challenging environments.
Arnaud Ayral, Chief Commercial Officer at Solarduck, noted that “by combining complementary technologies, we can unlock new possibilities and value for customers in the offshore sector.”
Solarduck has formed other powerful partnerships in the renewable energy industry in recent years. The company has joined forces with Giant RWE of renewable energy to develop what it says, the largest offshore floating solar energy plant in the world will be off the Dutch coast.
In July last year, Solarduck announced that it had successfully installed a pilot factory for this project in the Dutch North Sea, De Merganser, a 0.5 MWP test that the Solar PV pilot, located 12 km off the coast of Scheveningen, consisted of six interconnected PV -platforms.
