Bavarian civil servants honored a new photovoltaic system this week at State Road 2584 west of Munich airport near the Junction Hallbergmoos. Bavarian Prime Minister Markus Söder, Minister of Transport Christian Bernreiter and Foreign Minister Florian Herrmann, attended the opening.

The access road with four courts is equipped with 35 meters of solar modules. The modules are installed on the roof and cover around 1,100 square meters, with an extra 135 square meter on the south side. The Bavarian Ministry of Transport estimates the total output of the system on slightly less than 210 kW and the investment at around € 4.2 million.

The construction of the project is planned to start in September 2024. The solar energy generated will feed the Freeing Municipal Utility Grid and immediately feed emergency aid boxes, traffic authorities and the control technology of the road.

The Ministry of Transport said that the project will provide insight into the practical feasibility of PV roofing on roads. The aim is to make solar use of infrastructure areas economically viable and to support the Bavarian Climate Protection program.

The Ministry noted that the PV system generates sufficient electricity to cover the annual consumption of 70 households. Civil servants added that roads offer unused potential for generating renewable energy, combining mobility with energy production, while land use is minimized and promotes energy transition.
