Technology giant Google has chosen Shell Energy Europe to supervise its power portfolio for a newly open data center in the UK.

Under the title of Google’s ’24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Manager ‘in the UK, Shell Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) will use to balance Google’s existing Clean Energy portfolio.

Shell will manage a long-term agreement that Google has with Engie for the Moray West project in Scotland, including contracts.

The technology company said that between its other clean energy initiatives and the new alliance with Shell, the activities of Google UK in 2026 are expected to be performed whether new carbon-free energy of 95% will be carried out.

According to David Wells, executive vice -president of Shell Energy, the “various portfolio of renewable power supply, access to batteries and electricity trade and optimization expertise enables the requirements of Google.

The collaboration was announced with the opening of the Google data center in Waltham Cross, England, as part of a two -year investment of £ 5 billion by the technology company in the UK. The data center will meet the demand for AI-AI-services from Google.

Google wants to achieve net zero missions in all its activities and value chain, including the data centers. Due to their high electricity demand, data centers can prove a roadblock in the plans for low -carbon.

To this end, the British government founded the AI Energy Council in January, of which Google is part, to ensure that the British energy system can support its AI and computer infrastructure and promote the use of renewable energy in technology applications.

Google’s efforts to ensure that the electricity it uses in its data centers worldwide comes from renewable energy, has drawn it A Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with the American Solar Developer Leeward Renewable EnergyAnd his work with Shell has recorded the signing of three PPAs since October 2023. These cover offshore wind projects in the Netherlands.

The variable nature of renewable generation means that similarities such as those between Google and Shell are crucial for maintaining the constant current current that data centers need; Bess is often linked to data centers, for example in Splott, Cardiff, where the city council unanimously one 1,000 MW Bess in co-location with a data center.
