After years of planning and a long-awaited launch of the State community-solar program, the very first New Mexico community project is also ready to tackle. The 5-MWAC Cuidando Los Niños Community Solar Project in Belin recently organized a ribbon cutting ceremony.
In addition to providing clean electricity to subscribers, the project, developed by affordable solar energy, supports the mission of Cuidando Los Niños to break the cycle of homelessness in children. As part of the celebration, Affordable Solar will present a donation of $ 45,000 to the non -profit.
“We are honored to bring the state’s first community project to life here in Belen,” said Dylan Connelly, project developer at Affordable Solar. “Community Solar is about more than clean energy-it is about putting people first. By helping families save their bills and support Cuidando Los Niños with this donation, we demonstrate the extensive impact that this program can have in New Mexico.”
New Mexico approved his community law in 2021, but the rollout has been delayed by regulations procedures and utility processes. The completion of the Cuidando Los Niños project shows that the program is finally improving, so that a pipeline of projects unlocks that will yield savings and resilience to households throughout the state.
“This project proves that community work in the community,” says Cory Felder, regional director of Mountain West for the Coalition for Community Solar Access (CCSA). “It provides affordable power, local investments and community benefits in a way that no other clean energy program can do. New Mexico has been working to this moment for years, and today we are proud that the vision will be reality.”
The Cuidando Los Niños project is fully subscribed, partly thanks to the efforts of Community Solar Support Supplier Solstice, so that New Mexicans, in particular those who would otherwise not be able to install solar energy, can benefit from renewable energy. It is important that 50% of the energy production of the project is reserved to support qualified households with a low income, so that the electricity accounts are directly reduced to some of the most vulnerable residents of the state.
