The world’s first gigawatt-hour scale vanadium flow battery energy storage project has gone into operation in China, with a total installed capacity of 200 MW/1,000 MWh.

Located in Jimusar Province, Xinjiang, the solar and storage project represents a total investment of CNY3.8 billion ($520 million) and covers an area of 1,870 hectares. It was developed by Huaneng Xinjiang Jimusar Power Co., with engineering and system integration provided by PowerChina Northwest Engineering Corp. Construction of the project was completed in mid 2025

The energy storage for the five-hour battery project was provided by Rongke Power, a vanadium power specialist headquartered in Dalian, China. The energy storage system is located next to a 1 GW solar power plant and, according to Rongke, is designed for intensive daily cycling. The battery manufacturer added that the integration of the vanadium flow battery with the PV project should result in the use of 230 GWh more renewable energy per year.
