Enphase energy plans to begin volume production of its IQ Bidirectional EV Charging Platform in the fourth quarter of 2026, following a series of successful product demonstrations.

IQ bi-directional EV charging platform from Enphase Energy

IQ plugs into an EV’s DC port, charging the vehicle while providing energy backup during power outages. The bidirectional charger has been tested on American and European electric vehicles.

Throughout 2025, Enphase demonstrated the platform at multiple CharIN interoperability events in the United States and Europe. The company plans to continue participating in industry and interoperability events in 2026.

IQ is designed to work with residential and light commercial energy systems as single-phase and three-phase electrical architectures. It is being developed to follow bidirectional standards including UL 1741 and IEEE 1547 in the United States; and open communications standards such as ISO 15118-20 to support vehicle interoperability and standards-based vehicle-to-home and vehicle-to-grid functionality with compatible vehicles.

“Bi-directional charging only works at scale if it works between vehicles, homes and networks,” said Jayant Somani, senior VP of the digital business unit at Enphase Energy. “By building on open standards and actively demonstrating the technology in the United States and Europe, we are making steady progress toward delivering a flexible bi-directional charging platform that can support multiple markets as automakers enable these capabilities.”

The IQ Bidirectional EV Charging Platform was first announced in September 2025. Limited pilot projects will be implemented before full commercialization.
