AdventHealth is working to reduce carbon emissions and achieve environmental sustainability goals with an on-site solar installation at its headquarters in Altamonte Springs, Florida.

The faith-based health system’s headquarters employs nearly 5,000 people who support the system’s operations and healthcare delivery across the country.

As of this week, the Maitland-based national solar energy developer ESA will begin installing more than 7,500 solar panels on the four buildings and two garages that make up the corporate campus. In addition, solar canopies will be built over the entire surface of the parking lot and additional electric vehicle charging stations will be installed that will accommodate 62 electric vehicles.

“AdventHealth is committed to sustainability initiatives that help ensure the long-term well-being of our team members, patients, communities, businesses and the environment. This solar installation will help reduce our impact on the environment while demonstrating our commitment in a significant and tangible way,” said Christine Stewart, VP of organizational integration and campus management for AdventHealth.

The solar system will be approximately 3 MW in size and provide 4,200 MWh of electricity annually, reducing the campus’ reliance on utility-supplied electricity by approximately one-third and saving an estimated $20 million over 20 years. The solar installation is scheduled for completion in late 2024 and will be one of the largest private solar projects in Florida.

“This collaboration represents the first step in a broader strategy to help AdventHealth achieve its environmental goals with clean energy on site,” said Morgan Brawner, Chief Revenue Officer at ESA. “By developing a comprehensive clean energy roadmap, ESA is supporting the healthcare sector in achieving the ambitious goals set out in the Health Sector Climate Pledge.”

As a signatory of the US Health and Human Services Health Sector Climate Pledge, AdventHealth has pledged to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from electricity by 50% by 2030. In addition to on-site solar installations, the health system is also entering into long-term virtual energy purchase agreements to finance the development and operation of large-scale renewable energy projects in exchange for renewable energy certificates and to participate in community energy projects with local utility companies. service providers in some of the communities it serves.
