The Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure said in a recent statement that authorities have given initial approval for four solar power plants in the southern part of the country. The program, which will provide at least 250 MW of energy, will now be submitted to several regional committees for comment.

The projects will be built in the Arava region of the Negev Desert, between the Ramon Airport and the Timna copper mine, on a total area of 4.09 km2. The initial installation will consist of floating PV panels installed above treated waste reservoirs, as well as ground-mounted PV and storage solutions.

The second location will be built on the roof of a new parking lot, the third location will only contain storage. The fourth PV site will be built on mines. It also includes an energy storage solution and possibly an agrivoltaic installation.

The ministry said the latest plan will be subject to approval from the country’s mining regulator.

“The plan will help achieve the government’s targets for electricity production through renewable energy sources,” authorities said. “The plan does not require the construction of an additional above-ground transmission system towards the north of the country.”
