Swedish developer Alight plans to build a 90 MW solar park in southwestern Finland. The company says the announcement is a major step towards developing 1.5 GW of PV projects in the country by the end of this year.

Sweden-based solar energy developer Alight has shared plans to build a 90 MW solar park in Harjavalta, southwestern Finland.

The facility is expected to cover a total area of 105 hectares and supply the annual electricity consumption of approximately 17,800 households.

Alight says a community consultation held earlier this week was “successful” and it will now prepare an application for planning permission. Construction is scheduled to start in 2025 and it is planned to be operational in 2027.

“The location of the park is ideal for the production of solar energy, because there is sufficient sunlight and the electricity grid is relatively close. Moreover, the terrain is ideal for this operation of a solar farm,” said Warren Campbell, deputy CEO of Alight.

This is what a spokesperson for Alight says pv magazine the solar park is “a big step towards our goal of having 1.5 GW of solar projects under development in Finland by the end of this year.”

Last September, Alight announced the construction of a 100 MW solar power plant in Western Finland.

According to figures from the International Renewable Energy Agency, Finland had deployed 900 MW of solar energy by the end of 2023, up from 664 MW the year before.

Last week, seven solar projects totaling 213 MW across the country were given the green light after signing grant agreements with the European Executive Agency for Climate, Infrastructure and the Environment.
