Following the unveiling of the project earlier this year, Dutch developer Lion Storage announced on Monday that its flagship battery energy storage system (BESS) project, Mufasa, has reached a major milestone as construction permits were irrevocably granted.

With a capacity of 364 MW and a capacity of 1457 MWh, the project is ready to claim the title of the largest utility-scale BESS in the Netherlands once it is operational.

Mufasa will be strategically located in the port of Vlissingen (North Sea Port), one of the emerging energy hubs in the south-west of the Netherlands.

The project will have direct access to TenneT’s high-voltage grid and is close to various large-scale hydrogen electrolysis and offshore wind projects in development. Commercial operation is planned to start in 2026.

When announcing the Mufasa plans in February, Lion Storage said the four-hour BESS project will operate on a fully commercial basis. It will be active in all wholesale energy markets and ancillary services, facilitating the further integration of renewable energy into the electricity grid, while providing system services that guarantee system balance, network stability and long-term security of supply.
