The City of Campbell, California has announced a partnership with Paired Power to install a solar parking canopy with integrated electric vehicle chargers. The project will allow the city’s Public Works Department to add electric vehicles to its fleet.

The solar canopy, called PairTree, will generate electricity and charge the city’s electric Ford F-150 Lightning Pro truck. Paired Power will supply electricity to the Level 2 chargers attached to the canopy through management software called EV Connect.

The project was funded through a resilience grant from Clean energy in Silicon Valley.

“We are excited to partner with Paired Power to provide the City of Campbell with a 100% renewable EV charging solution powered by the sun, further strengthening the City’s commitment to sustainable transportation,” said Scott Kaptur, director of government and fleet solutions at EV Connection.

The PairTree solar hood consists of two-sided solar panels and a 42.4 kWh energy storage system. The off-grid solar EV charger contains up to two Level 2 charging ports with a charging capacity of up to 5.3 kW. The PairTree is generally intended for remote locations, such as concert halls and military locations, according to Paired Power. The energy storage system is UL9450 certified.

“The solar panels have units of 4.6 kW and the battery capacity is up to 42.4 kWh, which is substantial enough to provide a range of between 120 and 370 kilometers,” Paired Power said.

Paried Power said setting up one of these EV charging stations takes about four hours.

The company said the solar hood starts at $26,000, while some systems equipped with energy storage and multiple chargers can cost around $70,000. Installation costs average about $5,000 per canopy, the company said.
