Interlocking PVC mats proposed as a weed barrier on solar project poles

Based in Nebraska Triple S products has unveiled mats that can be used to protect weed growth around piles on ground-mounted solar projects. The companies Weed protector can eliminate the need for short-circuited vegetation maintenance on large projects.

“Last year we were approached by a solar farm construction team to develop a solution to the weed eating around the i-beams of their solar farm projects. As members of the solar industry know, farms can average anywhere from 100,000 to 250,000 poles. And the total maintenance cost of eating weed around each stack is incredibly expensive,” said Brady Shafer, VP of Triple S.

Over the past year, Triple S developed and worked with an American manufacturer who uses 100% recycled cellular PVC to make these mats. The recycled material also has a 30-year warranty.

“We really checked every box and then some,” Shafer said. “We looked all over the world for a solution and finally found it here in the United States. Our construction team we were working with wanted something eco-friendly, so we found a manufacturer that deals with recycled materials. They needed something that would last the life of the solar farm, and the use of recycled cellular PVC virtually guarantees that our Weed Defender mats will do just that.”

Triple S estimates that the Weed Defender mats can save millions in maintenance costs over the life of a solar panel.

The mats are 3/16 inch. thick and has a puzzle piece that allows the mat to be added after the posts are already installed.
