The Hungarian government is investing another HUF 30 billion ($83.9 million) in its HUF 75.8 billion rebate program for residential solar and storage systems. The scheme, which launched in January, is now expected to support more than 25,000 households.

The Hungarian Ministry of Energy has announced further funding for its Napenergia Plusz programme, a subsidy scheme for the installation of residential solar panels and storage systems.

The program started in January with a budget of HUF 75.8 billion and offers subsidies of up to HUF 5 million per home. The first aid decisions were taken in February and payments started in May. According to the latest government data, more than 18,000 supporting documents have already been issued, the total value of which exceeds the original budget.

To meet the requests already received, the Ministry of Energy last week increased the total amount of the program by HUF 30 billion. The program is now expected to support more than 25,000 families, 10,000 more than originally planned. Pre-registration requests were suspended on July 9.

Hungary had a record year for new solar energy in 2023, adding 1.6 GW and bringing the cumulative total to over 5.6 GW. The Department of Energy says total installations surpassed 6 GW this spring as it aims for a target of 12 GW by the start of the next decade.

“Based on the known development plans, this target can be achieved with great certainty,” the ministry said in its latest update.
