ABB has delivered an automation solution for 10 GW of renewable power plants in India. About seven years ago, the company started with a 100 MW project and has reached the 10 GW milestone with over 300 renewable energy projects across the country using its Internet of Things (IoT)-based PLC solution.

ABB’s PLC-based SCADA system helps collect and analyze real-time data to keep the plant running optimally and enabling low maintenance. It allows operators to easily monitor and analyze key plant parameters and gain full insight into plant operations. The utility-scale SCADA solution, delivered as part of ABB’s Drive Products offering, helps reduce the costs and risks of investing in operating renewable power plants.

“As India accelerates its transition to a clean energy mix, technology plays a crucial role in optimizing renewable energy capture and ensuring seamless operation of renewable power plants. Our solution remains central to this and helps enable efficient operation of hybrid plants including solar, wind and battery energy storage systems (BESS),” said AR Madhusudan, president of powertrain products for ABB India.

Renewable applications often require complex safety calculations, driven by the need to process large amounts of information to safely monitor the allowable ranges for temperature, pressure and more. BESS plays a crucial role in balancing the intermittent availability of renewable energy with the required power demand through energy storage, ensuring a consistent power supply. At the same time, there is a need for safe monitoring and control of these complex renewable processes.

ABB’s cyber-secure SCADA system uses the AC500 PLC to monitor key parameters and regulate plant operations in accordance with Indian grid code guidelines. It also helps generate customized reports with required analytics, catering to the diverse needs of renewable power plants, including hybrid plants consisting of wind, solar and BESS plants.

ABB has a strong footprint in the solar segment and partners with major engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) companies building projects across India.
