Integration of pumped hydroelectric power stations with energy storage based on compressed air – SPE
A group of Chinese researchers have made an initial attempt to integrate pumped hydropower plants with compressed air storage and have found that the latter can help the former better cope with large head variations. May 8, 2024 Emiliano BelliniResearchers from China’s Harbin Institute of Technology proposed combining pumped hydropower storage systems with compressed air energy storage (CAES) technology in an attempt to address a well-known problem of pumped hydropower systems – dealing with large head variations in hydraulic machines.“We designed a novel compressed air pumped hydro energy storage system, which integrates pumped hydro storage, compressed air energy storage and…
By Chris Crowell May 7, 2024 Solar Group Buys are programs that encourage a community to install solar energy within a certain time frame in order to get a lower price for their solar installation. Group solar purchasing programs have the added benefit of directing companies to high-quality, vetted solar installation companies. MadiZON, the solar group purchasing program for the city of Madison, Wisconsin, is a good example. MadiSUN is run in collaboration with RENEW Wisconsina nonprofit organization that advocates for clean energy solutions in the state.“Through the MadiSUN Group Buy Program, we are empowering homeowners to make informed decisions…
The Commerce Department announced preliminary findings from an ongoing investigation that aluminum extrusion producers and exporters in China, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Indonesia, Italy, Korea, Malaysia, Mexico, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Vietnam imported extrusions at less than fair value into the United States. Because these are preliminary determinations, Commerce will continue to gather information and accept comments from relevant parties while the investigation is active. Solar products covered by this study include tracker assemblies, racks and supports made from aluminum extruded in the countries surveyed. Two components mentioned in the latest updates to the scope are actuators…
RIC Energy PV project in Hanover, NY (Credit: Business Wire) RIC energy has sold three PV installations with a combined capacity of 20 MW to Brookfield-owned Luminace, located in the New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) and National Grid service areas. The Hanover II and Pomfret II projects are in Chautauqua County, with the Cortlandville project in Cortland County. The company says total investment in these projects is expected to exceed $50 million. “We are excited to work toward New York State’s sustainability goals and to make a significant economic impact in Chautauqua and…
In 2023, global investment in solar energy exceeded investment in oil for the first time. In the story of the energy transition, investing capital in solar energy has never been more exciting: solar energy is booming while the cost of generating solar energy is falling. The script for developing solar projects is changing. Many new characters have joined a phase previously dominated by government subsidies and feed-in bounties. Private investors – ranging from financial institutions to companies – are no longer merely ‘extras’, but play a prominent role. In the 2022 energy crisis landscape, electricity markets have shown extreme resilience, paving…

LONGi has launched a new solar panel designed for durability and reliability in hail and storms. The Hi-MO 5 Ice-Shield module is a bifacial, double-glazed panel that uses thicker top glass than traditional modules. Unlike standard bifacial double-glazed PV modules that typically use 2mm heat-strengthened front and back glass, LONGi’s new Ice-Shield module uses toughened safety glass technology, the same material that protects mobile phone screens from shattering, with a 3.2 – mm integrated top layer of tempered glass. This new design allows the Ice-Shield module to withstand hailstones of up to 55mm (about the size of a billiard ball)…
The modules are equipped with Maxeon solar cells and a microprism plate that is said to maintain a transmission of more than 99%. The microprism array is printed on a PET sheet using the roll-to-roll embossing technique. May 7, 2024 Emiliano BelliniA group of researchers from Korean conglomerate Hyundai Motor Group and Kyung Hee University developed a new vertical solar panel concept for applications in existing outdoor structures or in urban areas where land availability is limited.“This concept is a technology that increases the amount of incoming sunlight without internal changes to the solar cell,” said the study’s lead author,…
Fils, an enterprise-grade digital infrastructure provider, has been included in a PwC Middle East report titled “Carbon credit tokenization: Pioneering a Sustainable Future.” Since its inception ahead of Cop28 last year, Fils has integrated sustainability infrastructure with numerous financial leaders in the Middle East, including Mashreq and Magnati. Because of their critical role in facilitating sustainability, carbon credits will become a dominant player in climate action. The carbon credit market is expected to grow to $100 billion by 2030. The PwC Middle East report examines the phenomenon of the tokenization of carbon credits and the resulting benefits for financial institutions…
An “Australian first” demonstration of aggregated residential flexible demand will be rolled out in South Australia, with the state’s main electricity distributor delivering smart energy upgrades to 500 households as part of a pilot program to coordinate power consumption and network the grid to support. May 7, 2024 David CarollBy pv magazine AustraliaElectricity supplier South Australia Power Networks (SAPN) said the Energy Masters project will pioneer the coordination of residential resources such as solar energy on the roof and smart appliances to better match energy consumption with supply and respond to market signals, shifting household energy consumption away from periods…
