On March 10, a fire broke out in the PV systems installed at the Europa Point Stadium in Gibraltar.
Gibraltar Fire and Rescue Service said the fire involved photovoltaic solar panels on the roof of the sports complex.
“Two fire engines were deployed to the scene. We worked quickly to control and extinguish the fire, ensuring the safety of the property and the surrounding area,” firefighters said, without giving further details.
Local media outlet GBC reported that the fire was extinguished within 20 minutes and was caused by an electrical fault in the system, which caused a sparking cable to overheat.
In May 2023, a fire on two solar panels at Europa Point Stadium damaged the roof’s waterproof membrane, leading to flooding during subsequent heavy rains. According to the Gibraltar government, the damage has since been addressed through repairs, with the costs covered by general insurance.
