A 248 KWP solar system that was deployed on the roof of Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadium turned out to be more profitable in February than a comparative horizontal array in June. The ability of the vertical panels to generate more energy in the winter months than horizontal equivalents helped save more money at the typically high electricity prices of Norway in the winter.

A vertical sun rug in Norway It turned out to be more profitable in February than a comparative horizontal solar system was in June.

The 248 kW system that was used on top of Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadium has been operational for more than six months now. It has 1,242 vertical solar cells, developed and delivered by the Norwegian start-up via Easy Solar, which can produce nearly 220,000 kWh annually.

Analysis carried out by over Easy Solar to assess the profitability of the array calculated the money that Ullevaal Stadium saves compared to buying electricity for the spot price on the Norwegian market. The results showed that the system supplied slightly higher value per installed output than a similar horizontal system that was delivered last June.

Trygve Mongstad, CEO and founder of over Easy Solar, said PV -Magazine The fact that the dynamic power prices peak early in the year and falls in the summer due to an ‘overflow’ in solar energy, vertical panels are able to produce a higher value per installed output than conventional assembly.

“Vertical panels, especially on southern Noord-oriented panels on northern widths, provide a larger part of the energy during late winter and early spring,” explained Mongstad, adding that this means that financial yields of solar installations can be higher in winter than in summer.

In the analysis of Ullevaal Stadium, February turned out to be four times more profitable than August due to much lower electricity prices in the summer months. “This is a bit surprising, especially for Norway where most people believe that there is no sun in the winter,” Mongstad added.

According to reports in Norwegian Energy Magazine Europower, the results of the analysis of Over Easy Solar show that the target of Ullevaal Stadium for the use of a vertical solar system, which would get more energy in the late winter and early spring, is being achieved. The Europower report adds that a better distribution of electricity production during the year means that the stadium is able to use more of the electricity itself, saving network rental and electricity costs.

In January a Case Study analysis from Over Easy Solar Vertical Roof Arrays overtake Conventional systems on the roof during snow -covered months, with energy yield up to 30% higher in the winter in Norway.
