18 Republicans in the House of Representatives urge the Speaker not to repeal the IRA

On August 6, 18 House Republicans, including Andrew Garbarino (NY), Lori Chavez-DeRemer (OR), and Erin Houchin (IN), sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson asking him to keep the IRA after raising concerns heard about withdrawal.

“We hear from the industry and our constituents that they fear that the energy tax regime will once again be upended as a result of Republican repeal efforts,” the letter said.

The group of congressmen points out that they still think the IRA is “deeply flawed” and “the developing life-saving treatments, empowering the IRS to harass small businesses and disrupt energy markets,” but that preservation is necessary for business and market security.

“Prematurely withdrawing energy tax credits, especially those used to justify investments that were already breaking new ground, would undermine private investment and hold back development that is already underway. A complete repeal would create a worst-case scenario in which we would have spent billions of taxpayer dollars and gotten virtually nothing in return.

The letter also emphasizes that the IRA has created good jobs and stimulated investment in Republican districts.
