USTC achieves new record in efficiency of perovskite solar cells

A research team led by Prof. XU Jixian from the University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) has set a new global standard for solar cell technology. As of July 3, the Solar Cell Efficiency Tables (version 64) announced that Professor Xu’s team had achieved a certified stable efficiency of 26.7% for their perovskite solar cell, marking a major milestone.

“The Solar Cell Efficiency Tables, jointly published by the Australian Center for Advanced Photovoltaics together with scientists from the United States, Japan, Italy and other countries, have a history spanning nearly 30 years. The objective assessment of solar cell efficiency is widely recognized in the international photovoltaic academic and industrial communities.”

This achievement by Prof. Xu’s team marks the third year in a row that they have raised the bar for the efficiency of perovskite solar cells. In 2022 (version 60) and 2023 (version 63) the team also set world records. In 2023, they achieved a certified efficiency of 26.1%, surpassing 26% for their inverted perovskite solar cell and overtaking conventional solar cells. This continued progress underlines the team’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of photovoltaic innovation. Their latest success not only represents a significant advance in solar cell technology, but also strengthens the development of tandem solar cells.

The inclusion of USTC’s performance in the Solar Cell Efficiency Tables highlights the university’s leadership in photovoltaic research. This breakthrough is expected to catalyze further technological advances in the sustainable energy sector and contribute to the global shift towards sustainable energy solutions.
