Trina Storage and Clarke Energy have completed construction of the 50MWh Field Newport battery energy storage system (BESS) in Newport, Wales.

The Field-owned Newport site is operational and provides dynamic frequency response to balance fluctuations in electricity demand, and enables wholesale market arbitrage to reduce energy prices during off-peak periods. Construction of the project started in late 2023.

Clarke Energy, a multinational supplier of sustainable energy solutions and engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), was responsible for all EPC work. Trina Storage, a provider of integrated energy storage solutions and the storage-focused business unit of Trinasolar, acted as supplier and integrator.

The battery solution Trina provided includes tier-1 battery racks, power conversion systems and an advanced software and operating system. It is the third UK project Trina Storage has completed in partnership with Field and follows a 20 MWh battery that opened in July 2024.

Commenting on the news, Gabriel Buccini, head of energy storage at Trinasolar, said: “Our partnership with Field is driving the development of a more resilient national network, with this latest location increasing the flexibility of energy supply in South Wales. The opportunity to leverage Clarke Energy’s significant project management expertise was invaluable and proved critical to delivering this project within the expected timeline.”

Adam Wray Summerson, technical sales director at Clarke Energy said: “We are proud to have been involved in the delivery of the Field Newport BESS facility. Now that this site is commercially operated, our customer is actively helping to support the transition to a net-zero future while balancing renewable electricity generation and demand in the South Wales region.”

Trina and Clarke Energy have also previously worked together on the Boat of Garten battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Scottish Highlands. Clarke Energy offers a 16-year full operations and maintenance (O&M) agreement that provides 24/7 performance monitoring and maintenance; Trina Storage is providing its fully integrated Elementa solution for the project, offering performance guarantees for the Elementa units throughout the life of the project.

The first UK project using Trina’s Elementa product was the 50MW/102MWh Swangate BESS in Yorkshire.
