A new article that is co-author of the Australian National University Prof. dr. Andrew Blakers is investigating how long Pumped Hydro Energy Stations (PHEs) can offer 95% of the global energy storage for the electricity industry, with the storage capacity of 2 trillion electric vehicle batteries. These systems can be game changers for the world’s energy storage needs in combination with batteries.

Blakers noted in a recent LinkedIn post that Phes systems take more than 100 years, do not require new dams on rivers, have at least have Land and water requirementsAnd involve small mining.

“Phes has much lower capital costs than batteries (which excel for short -term storage). Together, Phes and batteries dissolve energy storage, “said Blakers.

The paper – “Pumped Hydro energy storage to support 100% renewable energy“Which was recently published in IOP -Science – Discusses the global Phes atlasses developed by Australian National University. These atlases identify 0.8 million off-river (closed-loop) Phes locations with a combined 86 million GWH storage potential, which corresponds to approximately three years of the current global electricity production.

“Long-term energy storage is required to support future energy systems dominated by solar energy,” said the researchers. “On a global basis, and for most regions, the Phes source is two orders of size greater than the likely future storage requirement of prosperous, electrified ‘and low -carbon people. This means that energy planners can use large-scale solar and wind projects with confidence in knowledge that there is at least one very credible storage solution. “

Off-river Phes locations identified in the worldwide Phes atlasses do not require expensive measures to cope with major floods or the need to damn more rivers.

“These attributes mean that the cost estimates and perceptions that have been developed for river-based hydroelectric systems generally do not apply to Premium Off-River PHES systems,” the researchers said.
