Tesla has officially announced the start of production in the Shanghai Energy Storage Factory, the first Megapack production facility of the company outside the United States. While the public announcement came on 11 February, the construction of the factory was already completed in December 2024 – only seven months after breaking the land in May.

The Shanghai facility will mainly produce Megapack, Tesla’s Utility-Scal Battery energy storage system (BESS). Each megapack unit weighs 38 tons and can store more than 3.9 MWh energy, sufficient to provide approximately 3,600 households for an hour.
