Battery Energy Storage System (Bess) Developer Root-Power has announced that it has been received a building permit for a Bess of 40 MW/80mWh in Rotherham.

The project, near Brinsworth, Rotherham, started early development in August 2024, as part of the bumper harvest of Root-Power of 40 BESS planning applications at that time. The project will be on a strip of land next to the M1 -Velweg, and although it was previously registered as “green space”, the site private ownership was not accessible to the public and was too small for any agricultural use; As such, the application was unanimously approved by the planning committee.

The location in addition to the highway also offers a considerable amount of noise research of the development. The development is also expected to yield a net profit of biodiversity of approximately 32.76% compared to the current basic line of the site.

A date for construction has not yet been revealed, but the root force has stated that it expects that it will be actively confirmed in mid -2028.

Neil Brooks, director of Root-Power, said: “We are delighted to announce that we have protected the building permit for a new site, this time our 40mw site in Brinsworth, Rotherham.

“Special mention must go to our origin team that has carefully selected an almost perfect location for this Bess project. Managing competing restrictions is always difficult when planning a project, so finding a suitable location in just one mile of the connection point in an urban area, without causing unacceptable noise or visual impact on sensitive receptors, is a real achievement . We are happy to see that the planning committee has supported our application unanimously, which is a real voice of trust in our process and team. “

This is the fourth Root-Power of the planning, so far granted in 2025. Earlier this month the company received a building permit for a 34 MW/68MWH Bess in the Scottish Highlands, located in Dounreay on the north coast of Scotland, with a schedule connection, with a grid connection, with a grid connection, with a grid connection, with a grid connection, which has a schedule connection date of 2026. In January the company had also received permission for a 40MW/80mWH Bess in Selby, North Yorkshire, and recently received permission for a project in County Durham.

This means a strong start of 2025 after a very successful 2024 for the company, which ended with the allocation of the planning approval for a large new project in the Stadscentrum of Glasgow. The Broomlan Road Bess, a 50 MW/100MWH Bess, is now in construction and will be close to Ibrox Stadium in the city center.
