Borussia Dortmund Planning 4.2 MW PV system in Soccer Stadium

Borussia Dortmund, a German football team, works with Ja Solar and RWE to install a 4.2 MW solar system with battery storage in the stadium, which supplies 4 MWh for consumption on site. There is already a smaller PV installation on the stadium roof.

Borussia Dortmund is, despite its middle ranking in the German Bundesliga Soccer League, planning to lead in sustainability by installing a 4.2 MW solar system in the stadium, supported by a battery storage system of 3.4 MWh. The club expects to complete the project towards the end of the summer.

In collaboration with RWE, Borussia Dortmund will install 11,000 completely black solar modules of Ja Solar, based in China, in the stadium. The system is expected to generate 4 MWh per year, which is sufficient to feed Stadium -Slichters for 1,000 races.

The club said it is planning to use all generated electricity on site, which reduces the emission of carbon dioxide by approximately 1,800 tonnes per year by approximately 1,800 tons per year. A smaller PV system of 1 MW was installed on the StadioStak in 2012.

The largest PV system that is currently installed on a stadium is the 4.2 MW Array in Ali Sami Yen Sports Complex NEF Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey. The second largest solar system competitions is a solar system of 2.5 MW in the National Stadium Mane Garrincha in Brasília, Brazil, followed by a 2.4 MW system at the Europa-Park Stadium of SC Freiburg in Germany.
