The Cuban Ministry of Energy announced the completion of six solar energy plants of a total of 130.8 MW in March.

Each plant has a capacity of 21.8 MW and is located at five locations: La Sabana, Granma; Remedios, Villa Clara; La Corúa, Holguín; Jovellanos, Matanzas; and Ciego Norte, Ciego de Ávila.

In February the Cuban authorities connected two extra 21.8 MW of solar panels with the schedule in Cotorro, near La Havana and Abrus, Cienfuegos.

These factories, together with those in March, are part of the newly launched project B, which aims to install 1 GW of solar energy on the national schedule.

Project A, which was initiated a few years earlier, also focuses on 1 GW of PV capacity and is still developing.

Both projects are intended to strengthen the national electricity grid and to reduce frequent power outages on the island. The official goal is to achieve a penetration of 24% renewable energy by 2030.

The International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena) said that Cuba had 292 MW installed solar capacity at the end of 2024, added with only 12 MW last year.
