India added 25.3 GW solar module and 11.6 GW cell production capacity in calendar year 2024, according to the recently released “State of Solar PV production in India 2025”.

The question of Pipeline Solar Projects and the return of the approved list of models and manufacturers (ALMM) order in April 2024 mainly ran the capacity increase. The Almm limited by the government supported projects to modules and manufacturers on the list to protect domestic industry against Chinese product dumping and quality.

The MERCOM report stated that about 80% of the installed module production capacity of India from December 2024 was equipped to produce solar modules using M10 and G12 waffing sizes. Approximately 64.6 GW of the total production capacity of module was mentioned on the Almm, based on the updated List-I published by the MNRE from January 6, 2025.

Monocrystalline modules, with or without liabilities soded emitter and rear cell (PERC) technology, accounted for almost 59% of the production capacity of the India module, followed by tunneloxide-passivated contact (Topcon) modules at 28%, then polycrystalline and thin-film modules.

Based on the current pipeline, Mercom expects Topcon modules to represent more than 58% of the annual production capacity of module and more than 64% of cell production capacity by 2027.

“Although the additions of the solar capacity of India have been impressive, the availability of modules and cells made in their own country are still left behind. Average selling prices remain high, purchasing is a challenge, and now the new American rates have added more uncertainty,” said Raj Prabhu, CEO of Mercom Capital Group. “To reach India by 2030 its 280 GW -Zonne -Zonne -white, it must tackle these bottlenecks and coordinate the policy of the production capacity expansion with its development goals. For manufacturers, which depends on export as a growth strategy, it is currently increasingly risky.”

In 2024, India imported solar modules and cells of a total of 65.9 GW. Modules were good for more than 36% of import, while cells were almost 64%. The export of the solar module from India was 4.5 GW, 6% lower than 4.8 GW exported in 2023.
