City of Glendale completes the first solar array in planned 4.9-MW portfolio

Glendale Water & Power (GWP) announced the completion and interconnection of the GWP Perkins Building Solar Project on the roof, a milestone in the constant efforts of the California City to expand its Clean Energy portfolio. The 184 kW system was interconnected on March 22, 2025 and will now contribute to renewable energy to the electric grid in Glendale.

The Perkins Building Roof Solar Project is the first initiative of Phase 1 of the Community Solar: City ownership programA wider effort approved by the Glendale City Council in November 2023 to expand solar energy on property in the city. Once completed, this phase offers approximately 4.9 MW of Schone, locally generated solar energy to the Glendale community.

“This project, together with the wider Solar Solar program of the city: underlines our dedication to sustainability and local energy solutions,” said Scott Mellon, acting general manager of GWP. “By installing the room of renewable energy sources, we help to make a cleaner, greener Glendale for the coming generations.”

The Perkins Building Solar Project on the roof is one of the six solar installations that are included in phase 1 of the program. The other sites are:

  • Brand landfill land mounting Solar
  • Sports complex Carport Solar
  • Glendale Community College (GCC) Lot 34 Carport Solar
  • Utility Operations Center (UOC) Carport Solar
  • Central Library Roof Zonne -Energy

As part of this initiative, GWP has awarded two contracts for the installation of solar systems on different properties of the city. Solar Optimum, a Glendale-based solar contractor, is responsible for the design, engineering, purchasing and construction of five installations. Meanwhile, Motive Energy supervises the design and environmental assessment of the Landfill Ground Mount Solar Project brand.
