The Tokyo -based sun company Toyo Production has started in its new solar factory in Ethiopia. The 2 GW facility, located in the central Ethiopian city of Hawassa, is planned to deliver more than 80 MW cells at the end of April.

Toyo said the factory is on track to be fully operational in May or June and to produce a monthly capacity from 150 MW to 200 MW.

The company, which specializes in topcon production of solar cells, first announced plans to build the PV factory in October 2024, usually to Serve the American market. It was supported with an initial investment of $ 60 million.

Toyo has since shared plans to extend the capacity at the location to 4 GW, a decision that he thought was based on “robust external customer demand and the internal needs of his new module facility” in Houston, Texas.

CEO and chairman Junsei Ryu said that 2025 is a “year of mass growth” for the company. “We are very positive about the strong demand that we see on the market and work diligently to execute the extra 2 GW expansion in Ethiopia,” he said.

The company added that accession to Ethiopia “marks a strategic step to diversify production locations and use regional benefits.”
