The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has opened a public consultation on plans to redevelop the British energy network.

The Centralized Strategic Network Plan (CSNP) brings together the planning of electricity, gas and hydrogen transmission and will look beyond 2030 to offer a 25-year-old roadmap for transmission repair. The plan is assessed and adjusted every three years if necessary.

Ministers of Energie from the UK, the Scottish and Welsh Governments have ordered Neso to develop the CSNP in addition to the Strategic Spatial Energy Plan (SSNP) in October 2024And Neso published the design principles at a high level for the CSNP methodology in December last year. Neso has stated that, in addition to the regional energy strategic plans (respects), they will communicate with broader public policy and frameworks to give reform to the broader British electricity grid.

The objectives of the CSNP are to guarantee an efficient development of energy network by holistic planning on coastal, offshore gas and hydrogen networks; strategic planning and prior to the need to enable investments in clean, reliable and affordable energy; speeding up network delivery by providing strategic data to support planning and regulations processes; And performing a consistent, robust and transparent assessment on a wide range of network options with regard to multiple assessment criteria.

The CSNP will assess a series of future network requirements, including the necessary upgrades that are needed to connect more solar energy and battery energy storage systems (BESS) to the schedule. The analysis will discover how again, supply, demand, and market conditions will affect network needs throughout the year, as well as the need to offer extra services to guarantee the stability of the grid.

The plan will investigate various options to expand the future possibilities of energy networks, to assess whether it is most suitable to manage energy flows via existing network sources, to upgrade network capacity by replacing existing components on the current network or developing new network infrastructure; All these will be assessed on a case -by -case basis for individual locations.

The consultations on these plans will close on 1 August 2025. Detailed data on system requirements are expected to be published before 30 June 2026, whereby the draft CSNP will be published on 1 June 2027. After a consultation on this design in the second quarter of 2027, the first full CSNP will be published on December 31, 2027.

Julian Leslie, director of strategic energy planning at Neso, encourages as many people as possible to contribute to the consultation process, adding that following a “coordinated approach to infrastructure planning is of vital importance – not only to stimulate investment decisions, but also to ensure that everyone has access to access”
