The German football team FC St. Pauli will install a rainbow-colored PV system on his stadium roof. The green energy supplier Lichtblick, based in Hamburg, has revealed that it will install the system during the summer holidays.

Employees will set up 1,080 solar modules with a capacity of 316 kW on the stadium roof, laminated in rainbow colors. A spokesperson for Lichtblick told PV -Magazine that the color process uses ‘morphocolor technology’.

Megasol energy delivers the modules. The Swiss PV manufacturer covers the inside of its solar modules to create targeted slight infection. The company said that the process results in a lively color scheme with a minimum power loss. Most of the light still reaches the solar cell, while only a specific part is reflected.

The system covers 1,800 square meters and generates approximately 285,000 kWh of solar energy per year. Lichtblick finances, installs and operates the PV system on the roof, the spokesperson said. FC St. Pauli will not bear any investment costs. According to a PV contract and food agreement (PPA on the spot), the football club will buy De Zonne energy generated by Lichtblick.

According to the Lichtblick spokesperson, the Millerntor Stadium consumes approximately 2,000,000 kWh of electricity per year. The PV system supplies up to 280,000 kWh.

Simulations show that the stadium consumes 90% of the generated solar power directly. Lichtblick feeds the remaining 10% in the PowerNet via direct marketing. The football club has a delivery contract with light blick for the extra electricity that it requires further than the roof system offers.

Project participants said this is the first rainbow -colored photovoltaic system in the world. Through the project, the Football Club and the Hamburg Green Energy Provider want to send a visible signal for the energy transition and for an open society.
