Stationary Bess is usually categorized by size, starting with stacking systems, followed by cupboards and ending with container units.

A large container can store a maximum of 5 MWh of energy. Cabinets usually contain a few hundred kilowatt hours, while piles are mainly used by houses and small companies.

Although smaller Bess types can be combined, they are rarely used to match the capacity of larger systems – so far.
