Scientists in Germany have analyzed the thermal run-away behavior of sodium ion batteries and lithium ion batteries in a response card of 10 l. They have thermally abused 30 samples, each under a different load level, and have discovered that both types were on the road when the load is at least 50%.

Researchers from the German Otto von Guerickke University Magdeburg have analyzed the thermal eliminated characteristics in sodium batteries (SIBs) and Lithium ion batteries (LIBs) and compared to layered oxide cathodes.

Thermal runner is a chain reaction that can occur in batteries when they overheat, which may result in fire and explosion. “During the thermal runner, the components of the cell cancel, which relieves flammable and toxic gases in addition to electrolyte fumes, particles and warmth,” the researchers said.

They compared the thermal eliminated behavior and gas delivery of SIBs and libs of layered oxide cathode. “This forced 18650-type cylindrical sibs from NFM cathode (layered oxide cathode) and 18650-type cylindrical libs from NMC cathode (layered oxide cathode) in thermal runaway,” they added.
