The Fari Islands on the Maldives develop a mix of floating and solar installations mounted on the ground that is expected to meet up to 50% of the archipelago’s electricity story on sunny days. The systems are part of a broader plan to expand the use of renewable energy on the development of the resort with four islands.

The total solar capacity on the Fari Islands on the Maldives is expected to triple by the end of the year to 6.4 MW.

The four-year-old Archipel, located in the North Malé Atoll, organizes various hotels, including Patina Maldives of Capella Hotel Group, the Ritz-Carlton Maldives and the Fari Campus.

The hotels collaborated with Swimsol, a solar energy provider in the Maldives and floating solar developer Solarsea to install solar panels across the islands. Once completed, the systems will deliver up to 50% of the electricity demand of the islands on sunny days.

Various solar projects are planned for completion this year. One includes a floating sunfalry that has to be installed on the sea near the Fari campus. It will consist of 40 platforms and 2,160 photovoltaic modules, designed to provide 24% of the total energy needs of the islands. The system also includes battery storage.

Developers also build on land-based photovoltaic systems, with 1.2 MW capacity planned in 19 residential and community buildings.

Patina Maldives plans to handle his entire resort with solar energy. The resort develops almost 3 MW capacity, including 980 KW solar panels on the eastern part of the island and another 2 MW on roofs across the entire building.

The Ritz-Carlton Maldives added in September on 61 ocean villas on the roof on 61 Ocean Villas. Extra panels were installed in the resort and the diving center restaurant, so that the total output of the system brought to 983 kW.

The Maldives had installed 69 MW of solar capacity by the end of 2024, an increase of 55 MW the previous year, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (Irena). In February, the Ministry of Finance and Planning issued a tender for a maximum of 150 MW Solar.
