Researchers from the University of Münster have developed a mechanical recycling process for production scrap of the dry processing of lithium-ion batteries. The method works without solvents, retains material properties and makes it possible for the recycled cathode powder to be reused immediately in the production of electrodes.

A new process for recycling production scrap of the dry production of lithium-ion batteries is made in the Meet Battery Research Center of the University of Münster in Germany.

With conventional battery production, active cathode materials are mixed in a slurry with solvents and coated on an aluminum power collector. This process uses the solvent N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) and polyvinylideen fluoride (PvdF) as a binder. The coated electrode must then undergo an energy-intensive drying process and the evaporated solvent must be recovered through an extensive process.
