The Ecuadorian government, through the Ministry of Environment and Energy, authorizes 643 MW of projects in the private sector to become a member of the national electricity system. The initiative includes self -generation and distributed generation projects with the help of renewable sources.

Minister Inés María Manzano has presented certificates to the responsible companies, so that they are given exclusive rights to develop feasibility studies, to build and exploit the projects.

The projects include PV arrays and hydroelectric factories and have a period of 18 months to complete the procedures and receive the corresponding engaging title.

Of the total authorized capacity, 179.1 MW comes from distributed generation projects that will deliver the electricity market under regulated contracts. The remaining 464.6 MW are self -generation projects aimed at supplying the own electricity needs of companies, with the option to sell excess electricity.

Unofficial estimates set the installed capacity of distributed photovoltaic systems nationwide at around 100 MW, with growing participation of residential, commercial and industrial users. Current regulations facilitate schedule connections and make the injection of surplus energy possible, so that private investments in solar energy are encouraged.

In 2024, Ecuador was confronted with a serious energy crisis with officially private nocturnal blackouts to reduce consumption. In response to this, the National Meeting approved the organic law in October 2024 to promote the private initiative in energy generation, aimed at stimulating the implementation of renewable energy and private investments in the sector.
