The EIA of the US Department of Energy has proposed to cancel a monthly report that has followed the volume of solar panels in the United States.

The proposed cancellation was announced in a Federal Register applicationWith which public comments up to and including 27 October 2025 are possible. In general, submitting a comment on a proposed three -year extension of the EIA’s Electric Power Surveys (EPS). The EPS comprises 10 surveys of entities involved in the production, transmission, delivery and sale of electricity, including the EIA-860M And Electric electricity monthly surveys, which are regularly covered by PV Magazine USA.

In the submission, the EIA stated: “EIA proposes to terminate form EIA-63B, photovoltaic module shipment report. EIA has established that the value of the data collected by the survey no longer exceeds the burden of collecting and publishing it.”

The document noted that the EIA communicates annually in the 10 surveys with an estimated 29,989 respondents, who submit about 101.177 answers. These reactions require approximately 251,092 “compensation hours” to manage. At the program level, the EIA costs appreciates hours at $ 94.99 each, which means that the total program costs yield around $ 23.85 million annually. The submission did not provide specific time estimates for EIA-63B.

The Solar Module shipment report (EIA-63B), on the other hand, only represents a fraction of those program costs. When the latter Three -year application was submitted EIA-63B was still active in 2022. At that time, the report mentioned 57 respondents of the 21,488 in total, accounting for only 0.2% of the estimated program costs of $ 16.5 million from the agency. That proportional share corresponds to approximately 10 staff hours per week and costs around $ 44,000 a year.
